RISVEGLIO. DESPERTAR EN EL MUSEO
Mikel Eskauriaza
18€
Risveglio. Despertar en el museo [Risveglio. Waking up in the museum] is an introspection exercise on the function of a museum, the materiality of art and the power of archiving. The starting point of the book is Mikel Eskauriaza’s homonymous photographic series, and it includes Miren Jaio’s and Asier Mendizabal’s unpublished texts. Mikel’s images document the two-week occupation of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. In 1990, students of the University of the Basque Country held a sleep-in in the museum to protest against the shortage of lecturers in the newly opened Basque branch of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Leioa. Eskauriaza, who was an art student and a photographer for the newspaper Egin, took part in the occupation and documented the events through photographs from his double perspective. The texts highlight the notion of waking up in a museum, the function of public collecting, sculpture, the body and the role of documentary photography in art. Different historical moments of the 20th century crossover and overlap in these pages. Through the sensuality of contact, Risveglio. Despertar en el Museo focuses on a certain idea of context – the power that teamwork, sharing and collaborating have to open new worlds.
